 Habitat: Intertidal. Subtidal. Soft shore. Enclosed harbours and sheltered bays. Sandy mud. Infaunal. Depth range: 0-10 (m). Salinity regime: Harbour-like variation. Microhabitat:  Low tide only, in burrows to 10-15 cm. Tube: Friable tube of mucous-lined soft mud.
Occurrence:  Uncommon but may have localised colonies. Density: 10-100 (m2).
Distribution in NZ: Only known intertidally from the northern half of the North Island, at a few localities.
 Feeding guild: Subsurface deposit-feeding/herbivore.
 Diagnosis:  Genus Asychis in Family Maldanidae.
Large Asychis species (19 chaetigers) without preanal achaetigerous pads, with deep ventral pygidial funnel and dorsal cordate pygidial lobe without anal cirri. Body very smooth and shiny. Colour: Opaque white to chaetiger 6, then pale greeny-brown with dark red on chaetiger 7. Crescent-shaped dark red band on dorsal cephalic lobe and a dark red area on ventral surface of pygidial funnel. Maximum size: 120 mm total length, 6 mm body width.
 Notable aspect: Pygidial funnel without cirri.
 Comparisons:  Like subtidal Asychis trifilosus, but without the three anal cirri.
 Taxonomy:  Epithet gender agreement corrected by Light. The New Zealand species is perhaps not A. amphiglyptus, but the name is retained for now.
 Distribution: South Georgia, Antarctica, New Zealand (?).
 Biology: The New Zealand Asychis amphiglyptus is known only from the low intertidal between Auckland and Tauranga, and is sporadically present on the east coast of the Auckland area.
